Wednesday, my beloved cat Simon died, quite suddenly. He’s had bad asthma almost a decade, and honestly outlived his prognosis by years. He had a severe attack and stopped breathing. This strip is my goodbye to him, as well as a confession of one of the major realizations that led to me realizing that I’m an atheist. The relatively short lives of cats and dogs makes perfect sense when viewed through the lens of evolutionary biology, but if view through so-called “intelligent design,” this is heinous fuckery most foul. I don’t know for certain that there’s no “god.” Like most atheists, I don’t deny the possibility of a supreme being, I deny the probability of one–the odds are clearly just against it. But what I do know is that if there is a divine creator, he’s a fucking asshole.

Of course, the worst part of being an atheist is that I don’t have the woo hope that I’ll get to cuddle with my beloved Simon again in some sort of afterlife. I wish i had that comfort. I’d like to think that Simon really is a Jedi-like luminous spirit. I’m going to try to pretend, anyway.

Goodbye Simon, my friend, my companion. I miss you terribly.

  1. FWIW, I believe in an afterlife, but not in a divine overseer of said afterlife. These aren’t necessarily incompatible.

Whether we get to see our loved ones that precede us into the Great Unknown is a question that I don’t have an answer for.
