Last year, Trump tweeted his for a “happy and enjoyable Memorial Day” (even for the “haters and the losers”). This year, he sang along and danced like he was in Karaoke bar (and Ivanka’s Memorial Day tweet makes Marie Antoinette look like a populist). Secretary of State Weequay Mattis is right: the Trumps really DON’T get Memorial Day.
And if you don’t know, the third verse of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is utterly repulsive, though it reflects lyricist (he stole the music) Francis Scott Key’s views quite accurately, given that Key was, himself, a slave owner, and as an attorney he helped slave owners “recover” their slaves (and sometimes helped slaves obtain legal freedom–history is nothing if not weird).
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Yeah. We need a new national anthem. Immediately.
