As an atheist, one of the things I often hear as an argument for religion is the idea that you can’t be moral without it, that somehow I, as an atheist human being, cannot be a good, moral person unless I’m willing be be bribed (heaven) or extorted (hell) into being so. That’s not only deeply offensive, but there is mounting evidence that it is wrong. The study Mo references here is one such item of evidence.

I also find it deeply troubling. Because the converse is that if these people ever lost their faith, they would have no compunction about going on a crime spree. That literally the only thing preventing them from murdering me where I stand is that God said that was bad.
