254 You Probably Think this Song is about You

This bothered me even when I was religious–especially when I was religious. The idea that an omnipotent god would be so bothered by someone stubbing his toe and saying, “God, that hurt!” that He would put it in his Top-Ten List of No-Nos is pretty absurd. It makes far more sense that “taking the Lord’s name in vain” means claiming God’s authority for your own purposes–like religious extremists do all the time–or claiming to speak for or interpret God’s intent–kind of like I’m . . . doing . . . now. Ahem.

Anyway, as for Joshua’s parenthetical remark in the first panel, while I was researching something a few years ago, I was surprised to learn that there are seven different orderings for the Ten Commandments. Hunh.

  1. Never minding that the Judeo-Christian God’s name isn’t actually ‘God’. A couple of people in my past have tried to lecture me for saying ‘Godammit’ which just goes to show how permeated the Christian dogma has been into our culture.

    Yahweh is only one of about seven two names that dude sports…
